byers street bistro

Posted in 5D Mark II, Food, Photography, Staunton, Virginia by firthefirst on July 1, 2011

detoured just a little on our way out of bath county virginia to nab some brunch in staunton, virginia.  it’s a surprisingly pretty town with great taste in food.  case in point: byers street bistro.  no better way to wrap up a camping trip.  no offense Justin, we loved the beans and chili, but …

misty mountain hop

Posted in 5D Mark II, Photography, Virginia by firthefirst on June 29, 2011

there are four great things you get to do when going lazy luxury camping that you don’t get to do when going serious backwoods camping:

  1. bring your DSLR and tripod
  2. play with fire
  3. eat s’mores
  4. stay up late at night

and since we could do all these things, we did do all these things.

gone fishin

Posted in 5D Mark II, Photography, Virginia by firthefirst on June 28, 2011

took a spur-of-the-moment weekend detour out to the far reaches of virginia to go camping with the guys this weekend.  fishing really isn’t my thing, but hiking and sleeping on hard ground are.  we had a great time eating beans, trying to catch fish, making fires, making more fires (tina is a pyro), and acting like hillfolk.  I’m going to have to call up smitty and set up some real backwoods camping for next year … (more…)

wintergreen evening

Posted in 5D Mark II, Charlottesville, Photography, Virginia by firthefirst on February 11, 2011

one of the weird things about wintergreen is that, as far as “mountains” go, it’s really not very tall (nothing in the mid-atlantic region really rises much higher than a speed bump) but somehow it manages to find itself wrapped in clouds all throughout the evening and well into daybreak.  I guess virginia clouds are just lazy and like to hover low.  and after marching to dinner in freezing rain, what’s better than stomping back to a hearty fire? wintergreen morning

Posted in 5D Mark II, Charlottesville, Photography, Virginia by firthefirst on February 10, 2011

struggling to make it through the work week this work, and I’m not sure why.  actually, pretty much this whole month.  just not a fan of february I guess… put together a quick panorama from some off-the-cuff photos shot at wintergreen last week.  makes me wish I could go someplace like this every weekend to stretch out, scoot around a bit on oversized chopsticks, and then just kick the boots off and relax.  everyone’s got their own winter remedy, and mine is to taste the winter.

journey to the center of the earth

Posted in 5D Mark II, Luray, Photography, Virginia by firthefirst on December 20, 2010

back in september we took a trip down to shenandoah to see luray.  luray is a tiny little town that probably hasn’t increased in population since the civil war, but it’s got one of the most magnificent cave systems in the country (not the biggest, but really beautiful).  this meant the best of all things for me, testing out the 5D mark II in some really difficult lighting situations.  like, total darkness.

skyland restaurant

Posted in 5D Mark II, Food, National Parks, Photography, Shenandoah National Park, Virginia by firthefirst on October 18, 2010

since I’m really not old enough to remember the good old/bad old days, I have no idea what national park food used to be like.  what I do know is, the in-park dining options these days may lack diversity but certainly don’t lack in quality.  the service can be hit-or-miss (in yellowstone it’s all miss, in shenandoah it’s usually decent) but you can be fairly confident your taste buds will be rewarded once the food hits the table. when the sun goes down

the week at work is shaping up to be half looney bin half zoo so there won’t be much substance with today’s post.  going to keep it short and let you enjoy / be amused by my continued attempts at night sky photography, this time from shenandoah. (more…)

you say goodbye, I say hello

Posted in 5D Mark II, National Parks, Photography, Shenandoah National Park, Virginia by firthefirst on October 11, 2010

I’ve been in a bit of a panorama mood ever since I got back from yellowstone (see?) and I wanted to keep that streak going.  my tripod handling speed is still not quite where it should be at, and as we all know, practice makes … better.

so, a few fridays ago, tina and I took off after work on friday and managed to reach the north gate of shenandoah national park just before sunset.  the place was practically devoid of people, everyone else long since gone home or gone to dinner.  perfect.  no traffic, empty overlooks, enchanting silence. Red Hot & Blue

Posted in 5D Mark II, Food, Photography, Virginia, Williamsburg by firthefirst on August 5, 2010

been trying to get into some semblance of shape before I get the tux tailored for the wedding.  when I work out, this is what I think about: eating at red hot & blue over the july 4th holiday down in williamsburg.  it’s a chain restaurant, but like le pain quotidien, it’s one of those quality chains that could really fob itself off as a stand-alone restaurant.  we’ve got one right up here in gaithersburg, md, but I’m disappointed to tell you it’s not as good as the one in williamsburg, va.

which of course begs the question, does barbeque really get better as you go further south?  probably.  north carolina, just wait, I’m coming. (more…)
