merry christmas

it’s shaping up to be a white christmas this year in maryland and that’s awesome.  maybe you’re lucky and you’re from finland, or minnesota, or someplace with inuits, but down here, snow is special.  almost precious.  I’ve read that with global warming, temperate, high precipitation climates (like the US east coast, the united kingdom, and the pacific northwest) will receive more snow in the winters.  which makes me wonder if I don’t secretly support a little more global warming?

because it’s just starting to snow, I decided to post some snowscapes from a ski trip to Utah a couple of years ago.  the fun thing about the images is that they’re taken on the trusty, crusty old canon G9.  for anyone who wanted a DSLR in their stocking but got coal instead … cheer up!  you can take great photos with a compact camera, just learn to use it well. every year I find that there are a few moments when I remember where I was at the same time last year, and realize I never could have imagined I’d be where I am now.  for better or worse, that’s the way every year should be: somewhat unpredictable, and unique.  if you find that every year looks like every other, either you are ok with that (that’s alright then), or you’re not looking hard enough (Rule 32: appreciate the little things), or you have a problem (fix it somehow — travel, switch jobs, make some terrible dating decisions, whatever).  this morning I pulled open a folder of old Mexico City trip photos from two years ago and was a little awestruck.  how far we come and go in two years.  two years ago, I was 25 pounds fitter.  two years ago, I was still in grad school.  two years ago, I was still shooting with my first Canon, the G9.  and most of all, two years ago, I didn’t really know Tina at all besides the fact that she always kept plastic forks ready and waiting at her desk, and this was a good thing if you planned to eat constantly in studio. because waking up is hard to do

you know the feeling.  alarm goes off (or doesn’t, depending on your luck today) and all too suddenly you are faced with the fact that you are going to work today (aren’t you?).  you turn around a few times in the sheets because, um, that helps?  and then its off to shock the bejeezus out of your central nervous system with a shower.  during which time you wonder about certain certainties in life. one short day in the emerald city

for tina’s birthday last weekend we took a quick jaunt up to the big apple to go see Wicked and eat cupcakes.  our mission was simple: to relax and enjoy New York City.  that’s not an easy thing for me because gotham just isn’t my sort of town normally.  maybe it’s overexposure, but lately I’ve actually been starting to like it.  or maybe it’s the broadway shows.

the thing with Wicked is, I’ve had the CD since the show first hit broadway during the last ice age (2003 or so) and yeah, even though I’m not 15 and blond, I can pretty much sing along to “Popular”.  don’t judge.  so, I’ve always known it was a great musical.  but there’s plenty of great musicals out there.  does Wicked really have that extra bit of magic, that transcendant ability to become a fantastic musical?
