counterpoint premiere

Posted in 5D Mark II, Music, Photography, Washington, DC by firthefirst on October 29, 2010

had the amazing opportunity to shoot the premiere performance of CounterPoint, a new ensemble that was co-founded by tina’s old friend jory herman.  you run into people in the craziest places, and sometimes that place is onstage at the kennedy center.  jory invited me to take some photos during a benefit concert at the Embassy of Pakistan which would raise money for the flood victims in pakistan.  great cause, great music, what’s not to like?

I don’t think I’ve ever heard an hour-long set of music with so much variety; it was pretty much sonic joy for me.  plus, getting to put the new 70-200 through its paces is quite a bit of fun in its own right.  definitely looking forward to hearing more from this new ensemble.

the opening shot and the shot above are probably my favorites from the night.  it’s about that moment when you’re playing music and you realize it’s not the keys or the strings in your hand that’s generating the music, it’s your entire body that’s generating the music.  it’s an awesome feeling and I’m not sure it can be understood unless you’ve played an instrument before.  there are times when it’s an absolute grind when you’re practicing and things are just beyond your grasp, but there’s a moment of magic when you’re on stage that makes it all so worth it.

thanks again, CounterPoint!

Very evocative photos from this concert, I think I would have enjoyed this very much too. Counter Point, did they record any music that you can link to or refer to, so I can listen to them here!?
