two years ago

every year I find that there are a few moments when I remember where I was at the same time last year, and realize I never could have imagined I’d be where I am now.  for better or worse, that’s the way every year should be: somewhat unpredictable, and unique.  if you find that every year looks like every other, either you are ok with that (that’s alright then), or you’re not looking hard enough (Rule 32: appreciate the little things), or you have a problem (fix it somehow — travel, switch jobs, make some terrible dating decisions, whatever).  this morning I pulled open a folder of old Mexico City trip photos from two years ago and was a little awestruck.  how far we come and go in two years.  two years ago, I was 25 pounds fitter.  two years ago, I was still in grad school.  two years ago, I was still shooting with my first Canon, the G9.  and most of all, two years ago, I didn’t really know Tina at all besides the fact that she always kept plastic forks ready and waiting at her desk, and this was a good thing if you planned to eat constantly in studio.

then came mexico city, the beginning of a long start to a long story, and the realization that vegas rules don’t work in mexico (Toby Keith is wrong, what happens down in mexico, does not stay in mexico.  am I complaining?  no, just sayin’)

two years ago, we were

looking a bit like the cast of Jersey Shore … oh wait, that’s just Smitty

climbing up temples

climbing up churches

discovering a new land

full of delicious new possibilities

stuffing our faces

while drinking in moderation

ok I lied about the moderation

which of course leads to munchies

and a happy ending to a strangely wondrous (but true) story.

here’s to two years ago.  tequila shots anyone?
