Distrito, and on a proper lark in Philly

Posted in 5D Mark II, Food, Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Photography by firthefirst on April 19, 2010

tina and I spent last monday out in Philly hanging out with the very-awesome Peter Bang.  obviously we weren’t there to just hang out, but, well, we don’t want to discuss details yet.  too bad.

*update: cat’s out of the bag.  you can check out the photos here

it was one of those magical [long] weekends where you decide to not really do/think about anything and, surprise, manage to do exactly that.  granted, it had some repercussions (as in, we are still not fully moved in yet) but so what.

despite the fact we spent pretty much the whole time mucking about, I did end up with some fun shots of things-that-are-not-pollinating:

like Tina

and Peter

and, of course, Distrito.

Distrito has to be one of my favorite restaurants in Philly.  I’m not sure how much the Mexico City trip I took while in enrique norten’s studio had to do with this (I think quite a bit, actually) but just posting these pictures makes me want to go back already (to Distrito, or Mexico City would work also).

what makes Distrito so great?  it’s certainly not the authenticity — I don’t think you could go to a street stand (oh Supertacos) and order hamachi tacos (if you order nothing else at Distrito, order this) in mexico city.  it’s not exactly the ambiance — I have no idea how to begin describing the interior décor of Distrito.  I think it’s just the goodness.

it’s like taking a kid to FAO Schwarz at christmastime and saying “ok, you can have anything you want as long as you can carry it out the door”.  watch that kid stuff his little chubby arms full of toys and then stop suddenly.  because he can’t carry any more, but he wants more stuff.  which to drop?  which to carry?

Distrito does the same thing to you as a grown adult.  it’s “tapas-style dining”, which is Spanish for order-everything-on-the-freaking-menu-already.  and every bite you take leaves you going, I want to order more of this one.  but no, I want to have room in my stomach to try that also.

but aha, here’s the secret.  bring more people.  then you really can order everything (this is the best life advice you will receive for a long long time).  and then you will find yourself smiling like a luchador on mexican speedballs.
